The Essential Oil
Cold pressed from the peels of a fresh grapefruit, this essential oil (EO) explodes with a bright, citrusy, refreshing aroma. It's a wonderful oil to diffuse, can be used internally or used topically . Grapefruit and Grapefruit Vitality are the same essential oil. The Vitality label is an F.D.A. requirement to suggest internal usage.
An article on National Institute of Health (NIH) suggests that Grapefruit EO has far more to offer than great taste. This article that discusses the oil's chemical profiling suggests, "Our study indicates that all grapefruit essential oils can be used as anti-inflammatory agents, with Rose grapefruit showing the highest potential, followed by Marsh and, lastly, Star Ruby, in both peels and leaves."1 Note: the word all is referencing all varieties of grapefruit, not all brands.
The article also mentions other uses, "The predominance of d-limonene in the peel oils indicates that these waste peels can be used medicinally for the management of gallstones, as an appetite suppressant and in foods as flavouring agents," . It goes on to say, "while the presence of β-phellandrene as the major compound in leaf oil of all grapefruit varieties shows the potentials of the oils as antimicrobials and antifungals".2

Botanically, Grapefruit is a natural hybrid citrus plant - a cross between sweet orange and pomelo. When the fruit was first discovered in the 18th century, it was nearly instantly called the "forbidden fruit". It is believed to have first been discovered in Jamaica but now grows in United States, South Africa, Brazil, and Israel.
Citrus oils may cause photosensitivity, so avoid direct sun exposure at the site of application for 24 hours after using it topically.
HISTORICAL USES OF GRAPEFRUIT PEEL
For hundreds of years, herbalists have used citrus peel to improve digestion, relieve intestinal gas and bloating, and resolve phlegm. They believed it to primarily affect the digestive and respiratory systems. It is the EO that gives grapefruit peel it's power.
