The Story of THIEVES As told by:

Mary Young, co founder and CEO of Young Living

Thieves is one of Gary’s most fascinating blends and one that we should all have in our homes. What is also fascinating is that we have many products that carry the Thieves label, from breathing, to gargling, to spraying, to household cleaning, to dish soap, to laundry soap, and every single one of them should be in our homes. Thieves blend is a protector, a cleaner, and an environmentally friendly product everyone in the family can use.

A thief is someone who steals, so why would Gary name such a wonderful blend after such people. In his research, he found that during the plague of 1720, the dying and the dead were being robbed by perfumers who thought they had discovered the ultimate weapon. When the thieves were finally caught and forced to divulge their secret, it seemed laughable that they were just using essential oils. How did they come up with such an idea?

Gary was fascinated and wanted to know more. He spent hours in the British museum and library archives searching the stories. There were many versions, but they all led to the same conclusion from which Gary’s research ensued. His research into the essential oil world has put this amazing oil blend into our hands.

Modern science answers our questions when we look at the chemical constituents and benefits of the different oils that make up this blend, which makes it easy to understand the reasoning of those thieves of long ago. Today there is so much research available for all those who want the details. Clove is our protector; Cinnamon, our purifier; Eucalyptus, our oxygenator; Rosemary, our balancer; and Lemon uplifts us with its invigorating and enhancing beautiful citrus fragrance. The brilliance is in the combination, which was Gary’s secret from which we all benefit.

Here’s a very old formula that history gives us:

Take three pints of strong white wine vinegar, add a handful each of wormwood, meadowsweet, wild marjoram, and sage, fifty cloves, two ounces of campanula roots, two ounces of angelica, rosemary, and horehound, and three large measures of camphor. Place mixture in a container for fifteen days, strain, and express the bottle. Use it by rubbing it on the hands, ears, and temples from time to time when approaching a plague victim.1

Humm? I think I’ll stick to my bottle of Thieves.

Besides all this, the oil blend of Thieves was tested at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, in 1998, and the scientific documentation was published with the most astounding results.2
