Nutmeg contains antioxidants, may support cognitive function and the immune system, and offers cleansing properties when taken as a dietary supplement. "The essential oil which is rich in terpenes and phenylpropanoids, nutmeg has significant levels of non-volatile secondary metabolites of the lignan/neolignan-type as well as diarylalkanes that have been isolated and identified."1

Nutmeg also contains lignans which can help reduce cardiovascular disease -especially in postmenopausal women. "“Western New York Exposures and Breast Cancer” study, lignan intake among post-menopausal women with breast cancer significantly reduced the risk of mortality from breast cancer"2

An article about  phenylpropanoids states, "There has been a massive increase in the number of reports about the medicinal benefits of the consumption of phenylpropanoids derived from the plastidic shikimate pathway. These benefits include anti-retroviral, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and insulin-sensitizing activities, the reduction of the risk of a range of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis as well as inhibition of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) oxidation."3

Historically
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), author of Hildegard’s Medicine Book, mentions the use of nutmeg for medicinal purposes. He was known as the first herbalist and naturopath of the middle ages. History tells us that it was a costly spice that was used in European cuisine in medieval times as a flavoring, as a preservative and as a medicine.

Nutmeg is an oval-shaped seed from a Nutmeg tree. The bright red webbing that surrounds the seed is mace. The tree is native to the Malukus, or Spice Islands, of Indonesia.
